How to Control Static on a Microfiber Sofa

When your sofa has a static electricity problem, it can be a big issue for a couple of reasons. First, pet fur and hair will be attracted to it, making for a frequent clean-up job. Second, shocks that accompany the static not only give off painful jolts, but they also can ruin electronics such as computer mice and game controllers. Luckily, there are a few ways to control your static problems, which work best when combined.

Things You'll Need

• Humidifier
• Liquid fabric softener
• Water
• Spray bottle
• Dryer sheet

Instructions

1. Run a humidifier during the drier months of the year.

2. Mix 1 tbsp. liquid fabric softener in a spray bottle full of water.

3. Spray a coating of the fabric softener solution on your sofa and your carpet, if the sofa is resting on a carpet. Allow the sofa and carpet to dry.

4. Spray the sofa again later if a charge begins to build.

Tips & Warnings

• If you prefer, substitute dryer sheets for the spray. Rub down the sofa with the dryer sheets. This method is more labor intensive, but you won't have to wait for things to dry.

• Test the fabric softener on an inconspicuous part of the sofa first to check for color-fastness.
