How to Increase the Firmness of a Mattress

You can increase the firmness of a mattress without the costly investment of a new mattress or box spring. As a mattress gets older, so do its mechanisms. Your mattress may get to a point where it starts sagging and causing disruption to your sleep. You may even be waking up with sore body parts. To remedy this, you can place a board or a piece of plywood on top of the box spring so the mattress cannot sag anymore. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of your bed and visit a hardware store with a lumber yard to purchase a piece of plywood if you do not have any spare pieces of plywood at home. You can also have the hardware store cut the plywood to the dimensions you need, usually at no extra cost.

    • 2

Remove the mattress from your bed and place the plywood directly on top of the box, checking to make sure it's centered and even with the edges. Replace the mattress.

    • 3

Check to make sure the plywood does not jut out or that replacing the mattress didn't bump the plywood. If you see the plywood sticking out anywhere, try pushing it back in. If it does not go, you may want to consider removing it and trimming it where necessary. After the plywood is even with the edges of the mattress and box spring, test your mattress. You should notice an improvement in its firmness.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may want to place a sheet under and/or top of the plywood to prevent snagging.

  • If you need to sand or trim any edges to avoid snagging or to make the plywood fit, be sure you have the knowledge on how to properly operate those power tools.
