How to Wax a Car to New

A car's surface can get dull and deteriorate from exposure to the elements, such as rain and sun. A car wax gives the car a hard coating that's a shield against such elements. It also gives a car an ultimate shine. Wax your car on a regular basis to prevent it from such damage while maintaining its value. Do it in a proper way and it will make your car look new.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a nice day to wax your car and park it in a shady area, because it may be difficult to buff off the wax if it dries quickly or sits on the vehicle too long.

    • 2

Wash your car thoroughly with a car shampoo or soap. You also need to use an extremely soft and plush sponge or mitt. Use two buckets by filling one bucket with soapy water and the other with clean water. Remove as much dirt as possible to prevent grinding it against the car's paint during the waxing.

    • 3

Let the car dry before applying wax.

    • 4

Put a little rubbing compound on a piece of cotton cloth and rub it on any deep scratch, blemish or abrasion, then wipe the area. The scratch, blemish or abrasion will disappear. Do this on each deep scratch, blemish or abrasion you can find.

    • 5

Polish your car using a car polish. The polish will remove impurities, hairline scratches and swirl marks and then smooth out imperfections.

    • 6

Apply wax using a paste wax or a liquid polymer wax. Wax the car in sections, one at a time. If using a liquid polymer wax, shake it well before using. Put it on a cotton applicator and dab it on your car. If using a paste wax, apply the thinnest coat onto the cotton applicator. Spread the wax evenly doing a straight line movement without any pressure.

    • 7

Buff the wax out with a cotton microfiber cloth or towel in the same direction it was applied.

Tips & Warnings

  • A paste wax can give a better shine than a liquid polymer wax. Apply a paste wax two to three times a year and a liquid polymer once every month or two, but it is much easier to apply a liquid polymer wax than a paste wax.

  • Do not wax your car when the weather is extremely hot or cold.

  • Do not use a shampoo or soap that is not made for cars.

  • Do not wax a car in direct sunlight.
