How to Quilt a Design in a Quilt Border
Quilting is really one step in a multi-step process. The act of quilting refers to the binding together of all three quilt layers, either by hand or by using a sewing machine. Stencil designs can be transferred onto a border with a fabric pen or the top can be quilted in a free-form pattern by allowing the needle to go wherever you see fit. Use the quilt border to stamp your personal touch on a quilt.
Things You'll Need

- Sewing machine
- Walking foot

Instructions

Machine-Guided Quilting
-
1
Insert the walking foot, a special sewing foot that helps to feed all the layers of the quilt through the needle, onto the machine. Replace the sewing machine needle and thread the machine correctly.
-
2
Place the border of quilt under the needle and lower the presser foot, which holds the fabric in place so it can be sewn.
-
-
3
Start the machine and follow the outline of the transferred design, moving slowly down the border of the quilt. Repeat on all four sides if applicable.
Free-Form Quilting
-
4
Insert a spring-loaded darning or embroidery foot, which allow the fabric to move easier while it is being stitched, onto the sewing machine. Disengage the feed dogs, which are located underneath the needle and feed the fabric through the machine. Replace the sewing machine needle and thread the machine correctly.
-
5
Place the quilt border underneath the needle, starting on an edge, and lower the presser foot.
-
6
Start the sewing machine and begin stitching in a free-form design, stitching from one end of the border to another, finishing all four edges.
Hand Quilting
-
7
Insert the quilt border into a frame or hoop, which holds the fabric still.
-
8
Thread the needle and begin to stitch, following the transferred design or stitch in a random pattern.
-
9
Move the hoop to a different border area and repeat after the section is quilted.
