How to Fight Extreme Exhaustion at Work

Workplace exhaustion is a common problem. According to Medical News Today, about 40 percent of workers in America have fatigue. Fatigue can not only make you feel sluggish and unhealthy, but it can undermine your productivity in the workplace. If you are able to, taking a vacation may help to restore your energy and motivation. If not, try making a few lifestyle changes to help you cope with exhaustion at work.

      See your doctor if you experience persistent fatigue that interferes with your quality of life. Sometimes, fatigue can be a symptom of a more serious underlying medical condition. It may indicate heart disease, a thyroid disorder or even diabetes. Fatigue may also be an indicator of psychological problems, such as grief or depression. Your doctor can help rule out any other medical conditions you may have.

      Find an excuse to walk down the hall. Brisk, periodic walks can help wake you up and re-energize you. If you have a job that calls for any excursions outside the office, try to schedule these at intervals throughout the day. It'll give you an excuse to move around, and breaking up the day into chunks can help fight exhaustion.

      Exercise regularly outside of the office. Try to squeeze in even a short 10-minute workout before going to the office. An aerobic workout can not only help you feel more energized during the day, but it may help you sleep better that night.

      Establish healthy sleeping habits. Go to sleep and wake up at a set time each day, and make sure that you get enough total sleep. Try to relax as you approach bedtime. Take a warm bath or watch a favorite movie to help you cope with daily stress. And avoid alcohol and caffeine close to bedtime.

      Fuel your body's needs with proper nutrition throughout the day. Don't skip breakfast--you'll need the energy. Try to refuel during work with healthy, light snacks. Bring crackers and cheese into work. Keep a can of mixed nuts in your desk for a protein snack. Even better--try bringing in a bag of celery and carrot sticks to the office. Not only are these healthy, but the crunching may help temporarily wake you up.
