How to Tie Hakama Pants

Hakama pants are a traditional Asian garment originally only worn by samurai men. The garment is very similar to a skirt and is the lower part of a kimono. It is designed to be worn over a "gi" or the standard martial arts uniform which was traditionally considered to be undergarments. Today the hakama pants are part of the wardrobe of martial arts uniform. Oftentimes the garment is reserved for the highest levels of martial artists as a sign of respect. but Tying the hakama properly can be challenging.   1. How to Tie Hakama Pants

    • 1

      Step into the hakama. There is a front side and a back side, both of which have straps and will need to be tied.

      Hold the back of the hakama at the small of your back allowing the front to hang at your knees. Pull the straps of from the back to the front near your navel.

      Cross the straps, cinching them at your waist.

      Hold the tension in the straps while you tie a small bow at your waist with the remaining length of the straps.

      It is important to tie your hakama on securely otherwise you will not be able to train with free movements.

      Pull the remaining strap lengths from the right and left strap over and through the hakama's obi (belt). You should repeat this until there is approximately 5 inches of strap hanging down on either side.

      Pull up the front of the hakama that is sitting at your knees and position it over the bow you tied in Step 4.

      Pull the straps behind you, crossing them at the small of your back over the hakama tied in position. Bring them back to the front.

      Make sure the straps are flat and not twisted around. Neatness is a sign of respect and great care should be taken to do this properly.

      Cross the straps at your navel and cinch them tightly under the obi. Securely fasten them with a knot in place.

      Pull the left strap in front of you and fold back toward the obi in 3 inch sections. When these sections are at your navel, hold them flat against the obi.

      Bring the other (right) strap over the folded strap from Section 9 by using your free hand. Thread it behind the folded section securely holding it in place. Repeat this until you have wrapped the entire right strap over the left.

      Tuck it under the obi to keep it securely in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is best to ask a sensei or master at your dojo on the procedures to tie a hakama. Each dojo may do things differently and you will be disrespectful if you tie it in a fashion other than the one accepted there.
