How to Remove an Agitator on a Whirlpool Washer
The Whirlpool washer agitator will need to be removed if you need to access components attached to the wash tub. The agitator connects to the gear case using an agitator bolt in most models. Unplug the power cord of the Whirlpool washer from the wall outlet.

Open the washer lid. Pull the agitator cap off the top of the agitator. If the agitator cap is stuck, you can insert a flathead screwdriver blade between the bottom of the cap and the agitator. Twist the handle of the screwdriver and pop the cap off the agitator.

Remove the debris cap that is in the center of the agitator. The debris cap has a handle that you grab with your hand and pull the debris cap straight out of the agitator. You may have to use a back and forth twisting motion to pull the cap out. There is an o-ring that is attached to the outside of the cap. If it pops off the debris cap while you are pulling it out, be sure to remove the o-ring from the agitator and put it back on the debris cap.

Use a socket wrench with an extension to remove the center stud bolt that secures the agitator shaft to the washer tub.

Place your fingers under the agitator and pull it straight up and remove it from the washer tub.

Disconnect the power cord of the washer from the wall outlet.

Open the washing machine lid. Use a socket wrench to loosen, but not remove, the hex head set screw that secures the agitator to the splined shaft. The set screw is on the side of the agitator near the bottom.

Pull the agitator straight off the splined shaft and out of the washing machine.
