Instructions

Take and pass the North Carolina independent adjuster state examination. The only exemption to this rule is if you are a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). To get the candidate guide, contact Pearson VUE at 1-800-274-0668 or visit their website linked in the Resources section. This is the only company that distributes official guides, although there are other companies that do pre-licensing training classes for North Carolina. This training can help you pass the North Carolina exam, but pre-licensing training is not required for an adjuster license.

For the exam, you'll need to bring your confirmation number, photo identification, and exam ticket. You will get your score at the end of the exam. At the exam, you will fill out an insurance adjuster application in addition to taking the test. If you pass, your license will be mailed to you in seven to 10 days.

If you are a non-resident with an active home state insurance adjuster license, you can apply online through the link in the Resources secxtion. However, you must hold a license from a state that requires testing or North Carolina will not reciprocate it. If you are a non-resident from a state that licenses by testing and you are moving into North Carolina, you must apply within 90 days of moving to avoid taking the exam. Your former state's license must be cancelled first.

If you are exempt from the exam, go online to the National Insurance Producer Registry to apply for your North Carolina adjuster license. This is the fastest way to apply.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is no pre-licensing requirement for the adjuster exam. If you see references to pre-licensing, they are most likely referring to the agent exams. Pre-licensing education is completely optional.
