Anyone who has listened to Dr. Laura for any time at all knows that she is a huge advocate of the stay at home mom. In fact, her newest book praises the efforts made by these mothers. She is also a huge supporter of work at home moms. As times are getting hard, many women need to help their families by bringing in some income. The good news is that it is possible to both work and be home with your kids. There are legitimate work at home jobs out there if you know where to look. Here's some tips and tricks to get you started.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, determine what your strengths are. Some good clues are your hobbies and the things you like to do in your spare time. These can give you ideas of the skills that you have that you can turn into cash.

  2. Step 2

Next, determine what you need to make as far as income. Many women overestimate this number. Keep in mind that you won't have the expenses of daycare, travel or convenience food. That eats up a lot of a working moms income right off the top. If your husband is still working, use that flexibility to build your income base. If not, economize as much as you can.

  3. Step 3

Join a community that promotes or supports work at home moms, like the one listed under resources below. You will find all the latest job openings and be able to ask question of people that really live this lifestyle. You can also ask for advice if you're uncertain of a particular opening. These message boards are great at spotting scams.

If you think you have what it takes to be a writer, brush up on your spelling and grammar. This will help you stand above the crowd. There are plenty of places that hire beginning copy writers, including my two favorites, listed under resources. Also, join the Writer's Compensation Program here at eHow.

  5. Step 5

There are hundreds of companies that are finding that hiring calling agents that work in their own home is extremely affordable. They often out source things like customer service, order taking and lead generation. National companies such as Convergys hire work at home moms. Pay varies among companies, but most moms are able to make better than minimum wage.

Home parties have been around for ages and are still a great way to make money working from home. Companies such as Tupperware, DeMarle and Creative Memories are good options for moms. Most companies have modest start up costs for inventory and supplies. You can expect to work out of the home a few hours a week. Also, most the of challenge is cold calling to generate new leads, so if you hate talking on the phone, this might not be for you.

  7. Step 7

If you are quick typist, consider getting on as a transcriber. While many companies hire medical transcribers, it takes extensive training. Other companies have less technical work. You can listen to audio clips and type a written record. Typing tests are required and pay is based upon words or pages typed. The faster your fingers, the more you can make.

If you are good with your hands, try selling your handmade wares to make money working at home. While EBay has been a good option in the past, there are much better communities for work at home moms. Try etsy.com. This popular community focuses on handmade goods, everything from knitting to homemade fudge. It's free to shop there and reasonable to list items.

  9. Step 9

Once you've landed your work at home job, be sure to take it seriously. Make a schedule and stick to it. I find that it's easiest to get up early in the morning and work. I can get in two to three hours before my kids are up and active. If you're a night owl, work when the kids are in bed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your weekends open for family time. After all, you wanted to work at home to spend more time with your family.
  • If your kids need you, stop and give them your full attention. There's nothing that pays better than being able to take a break and rock your baby to sleep.
  • Have more than one part time work at home "egg". Not every company will have consistent work all the time. Having multiple jobs can ensure that you always stay busy.
  • Don't panic if it doesn't come together right away. Things take time. Keep working at it.
  • When you're "on the clock", don't waste time browsing Facebook or similar sites! It hurts productivity and that costs you money.
  • Many work at home jobs hire you as an independent contractor. That means they don't withhold taxes and you are responsible for them at the end of the year. Plan for it.
  • No legitimate at home job should require you to pay money to get hired. Exceptions include buying needed supplies, inventory or a small background check fee.
