How to Troubleshoot a Chevrolet Lumina
The Chevrolet Lumina was introduced in 1989. The last model year of the Lumina was 2002. The Lumina was designed to compete with the Ford Taurus during this time. Check your front shoulder belt guide loop retaining nuts. Some model years (especially 1990 and 1997) had issues with the seat belt assembly. The fasteners would pull through the anchor plate that was mounted on the door of the Lumina. Obviously, if the seat belt breaks this presents a major safety issue, especially if it happens while you're in an accident. To fix this, you'll need to take it to a GM dealer where they can replace the retaining nuts on the assembly.

Have your passenger side airbag assembly checked. Some 2002 models of the Lumina had no air bag check valve installed into the system. This means that when the air bag deploys in an accident, the passenger could be severely injured from the bag's deployment and the bag may not provide the necessary protection due to decreased pressure after the initial deployment. This must be serviced by a GM dealership.

The 1997 model year of the Chevy Lumina used lower pinion bearings in the power rack and pinion assembly than in previous model years. This resulted in retainer tabs that were not crimped properly. This, in turn, might cause the unit to fail and the internal ball bearings to escape. If the bearings do escape, then power steering is lost. However, because the unit is designed to work as a power steering unit, major steering problems would occur, such as understeer while making left turns, but dramatic oversteer or over-correction by the steering rack during right-hand turns. This could result in a collision. You'll need to have the unit replaced by a GM dealership.
