How to Use a Turbo Timer
If you own a turbocharged car, installing and learning how to use a turbo timer will help your turbo last for many years to come, with less chance of it failing. A turbo timer is a device that is wired to the car's ignition system and that keeps the motor running for a short period after the ignition is turned off. Keeping the motor running allows the turbo to cool down. The turbo is cooled by the engine's oil supply and when the oil is cut off abruptly, the turbo can overheat, potentially damaging it.

1
Locate the wiring harness that goes to the car's ignition switch. This is located near or under the steering column and may require the removal of some trim to access it. Consult your car's workshop manual for detailed instructions.
-
2
Disconnect the inline connector on the ignition switch wiring harness. There should be several wires going to the ignition switch.
-
-
3
Plug the wiring harness adapter that came with the turbo timer into the car's ignition switch wiring harness. If you are not using a harness adapter, skip to Step 5.
-
4
Plug the power harness that came with the turbo timer kit to the harness adapter, and the other end to the turbo timer.
-
5
Find the wire or wires that go to the ignition switch's "ON" position. If necessary, consult your workshop manual to locate the wire. Splice the appropriate wire from the turbo timer onto the wire that goes to the "ON" position by cutting it and connecting the wire from the turbo timer. The instructions with the turbo timer should show you which wire to use. You can solder the wires or use an inline connector wrapped with electrical tape.
-
6
Find the wire on the ignition switch that goes to the 12V constant power source. Splice in the correct wire from the turbo timer to this wire. The instructions with the turbo timer should show you which wire to use.
-
7
Find the wire on the ignition switch that goes to an accessory (ACC) and splice in the correct wire from the turbo timer. The instructions with the turbo timer should show you which wire to use.
-
8
Ground the black wire that comes off of the turbo timer to a metal ground inside the dash or someplace similar. Attach a metal eyelet to the end of the ground wire and screw it to the dash. The ground should be metal and free of any paint.
-
9
Install the turbo timer on the dash or somewhere similar, using double sided tape to secure it. You can also install the timer in the glove box so that it cannot be seen.
-
10
To use the turbo timer, set the amount of time you want the car to remain running after the ignition switch is shut off by using the switch on the front of the unit.
-
11
Start the motor and then turn the key to the off position. If the timer is functioning correctly, the engine should stay running for the predetermined amount of time before shutting off.
