Once your dog has been professionally diagnosed with kidney disease, there is still much you can do to make your companion comfortable and keep a high quality of life. One way owner intervention can have a major positive impact is controlling and minimizing your dog's nausea and vomiting. With some over-the-counter medication and an easily-digestible diet, you should be able to keep your pet interested in food for some time.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Antacids
  • Rice
  • Ground turkey
  • Frying pan
  • Saucepan
  • Measuring cup
  • Filtered or bottled water
  1. Step 1

Reduce the stomach acid. Excess stomach acid can lead to nausea and vomiting. Dogs apparently respond well to over-the-counter antacids such as Pepcid, Zantac or Tagamet, which can be found at any pharmacy or Wal-Mart. Check with your veterinarian for suggested dosage based on your dog's size and age.

  2. Step 2

Feed a bland diet. The old standby rice with ground turkey is bland enough to settle the stomach of just about any sick dog. Cook a cup of rice as per the directions. Fry a pound of ground turkey without seasoning. Combine the two, and feed your dog 1/2 cup to a cup of the mixture twice a day until the vomiting stops.

  3. Step 3

Reduce the portions. A dog with kidney disease and nausea can't handle a full meal like it could when healthy. Feed your dog smaller meals--even just a few bites--more often throughout the day. Use a measuring cup to keep track of how much your dog is actually eating. Your vet may find this information useful.

  4. Step 4

Let your pet drink. If your dog is vomiting, it needs full access to fresh water at all times to prevent dehydration. Give it filtered or distilled water only, as the chemicals in tap water may upset his system.

Tips & Warnings
  • Refrigerate the ground turkey and rice mixture in a sealed container. It should be okay to serve for a couple days.
  • Warm the refrigerated ground turkey and rice slightly before feeding.
