Rest the tendon. Resting the thumb tendon is essential to its healing quickly and correctly. Avoid athletics where your hands need to be extensively utilized. Rest will also prevent further aggravation of the tendon.

Apply ice to the thumb tendon. Icing the tendon for periods of 15 to 30 minutes will reduce swelling and allow the blood to circulate more easily. Do not apply ice directly to the skin; instead use a compression pack.

Wear a hand brace. Using a hand brace provided by your physician will prevent the thumb tendon from being involuntarily strained or aggravated. The brace also will correctly position the thumb and ensure proper rest for efficient healing.

Take an anti-inflammatory drug. An anti-inflammatory medication provided by your doctor will both ease pain and control the level of swelling in the affected area. Be sure to follow your doctor's prescription exactly.

Strengthen the tendon. Performing thumb-strength exercises provided by your doctor will help to fully heal the tendon and regain proper range of motion. Be sure to stretch the tendon before exercising it to avoid pain.
