How to Type With Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard for manipulating and touching up digital images, and it is widely used in the field of graphic design as well. The possibilities for creating digital art in Photoshop are virtually endless, but before you can become a digital Van Gogh, you've got to learn how to use the tools Photoshop offers. The type tool is one of the most fundamental of the Photoshop tool set.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Adobe Photoshop and create a new file, specifying your desired size and file name.

    • 2

Select the "type tool" from the tools panel at the left of the screen. It is signified by the large capital "T."

    • 3

Specify font, style, size, color and other text options in the tool options panel at the top of the screen.

    • 4

Click on the portion of the screen where you would like your text to appear and start typing. Alternately, if you would like your text to be bound to a certain area of the image, click and drag a bounding box with the "type tool" and then start typing.

    • 5

Select "window-> character" from the control panel and highlight your text using the "type tool." Here you can select more settings for your text, such as case, kerning, leading and tracking.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are more options for the "type tool" that allow you to change the orientation of your text to vertical, and to make a text mask around an image. Explore these options for different and fun text effects.

  • Each time you create a new space for text, a new layer is created, and you cannot change the text options on layers you are not working on. Make sure you know which layer the text you want to manipulate is on.
