How to Perm Black Hair at Home

Perming (or relaxing) black hair is a chemical process that results in straight and healthy hair. It is an alternative to another form of straightening black hair called "pressing," which is done using a hot comb that is heated then combed through the hair. A perm can last up to two months depending on hair growth rate and does not lose its texture if it comes in contact with water. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. How to Perm Black Hair at Home

    • 1

Purchase a no-lye hair relaxer from a drug or convenience store. The relaxer packet contains all of the products needed for the treatment, including shampoo, conditioner and hair treatment. The purchase of additional hair products is not required.

    • 2

Do not comb or wash hair for at least 24 hours before treatment. If this is your first time using a perm treatment, do a spot test to make sure you don't have an allergic reaction to the product. Instructions for this are available on the box.

    • 3

If there are no allergies to the product, begin treatment prep by very gently parting the hair into four sections. Pin three of the sections up with banana clips, making sure not to scratch the scalp. Read the instructions on the box very carefully and follow them exactly as written.

After perm has been administered and washed thoroughly, blow-dry and style your hair.

Tips & Warnings

  • At about two months, two or more centimeters of new hair growth can usually be seen. When this occurs, "touch up" the perm using the same product to maintain texture and to straighten new growth.

  • Failure to follow through with product instructions as listed on the box may result in chemical burns on the skin.
