1
Talk to your doctor about medications or other treatments. Certain drugs can help open up airway passages and reduce inflammation. The drugs you use will depend on the condition causing your shortness of breath. If your breathing troubles are more severe and blood levels of oxygen are extremely low, supplemental oxygen might be necessary.

2
Talk to your doctor or respiratory therapist about designing an effective exercise regimen. Appropriate exercises help increase endurance and improve lung function. Increasing your level of fitness will reduce shortness of breath as you will be able to stay active longer without overexerting yourself, which often leads to this symptom.

Learn breathing exercises to ease shortness of breath. Two common exercises are pursed-lip breathing and diaphragm breathing.
Pursed-lip breathing requires you to inhale and exhale with your lips pursed as if you were going to whistle. It creates a pressure that helps open the airways.
The diaphragm is the large muscle found between your lungs and your abdomen. Sit up straight, and relax your shoulders. Place a hand on your stomach as you breathe. If your hand moves, you know you are engaging your diaphragm. Breathing this way will expand your capacity for deep breathing.
Your doctor or respiratory therapist can instruct you exactly on technique, frequency and any other pertinent information.

Decrease anxiety. The feeling of not being able to get enough air, especially on a regular basis, can be upsetting. This anxiety can worsen your shortness of breath. Relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, tai chi, progressive relaxation and positive visualization might be useful. Try different techniques, and stick to the ones that you enjoy most; this will encourage you to do it on a regular basis.

5
Quit smoking. Talk to your doctor if you cannot do it on your own. He can recommend options that might help.

6
Try acupuncture. A review of material by the University of Maryland Medical Center found it relieved shortness of breath. Always work with a licensed practitioner.
