How to Bond Mylar

Mylar is the trade name of a plastic film made by DuPont. The chemical properties of Mylar prevent many adhesives from working effectively. This can make it difficult to bond pieces of Mylar together when needed. Contact cement is capable of bonding Mylar securely when used properly, making it difficult to remove two pieces of Mylar from one another once they are bonded together.

Instructions

    • 1

Tape one piece of Mylar to a flat surface. The side to be bonded should be facing upward.

    • 2

Apply contact cement to one side of both pieces of Mylar.

    • 3

Wait for about 30 seconds until the contact cement becomes tacky.

    • 4

Press the contact cement-covered side of the free piece of Mylar to the top surface of the taped piece of Mylar. Be careful to ensure the pieces of Mylar do not wrinkle while being bonded together.
