How to Change the Download Speed

Are you still experiencing slow download speeds when downloading content from the Internet? If you connect to the Internet via DSL or cable, the problem may be rather simple to remedy. It may not be your ISP after all. It may be your web browser.

      On your Start menu in Windows, select your Internet web browser from the populated list. Wait for your browser to completely load.

      In your address box, enter about:config. This will allow you access to your Internet web browser's configuration menu. Once it loads, you will see an option called a filter box. In this filter box, you want to enter persistent.

      Select the preference names with their integer values that have now appeared on your screen. Make sure to double-click on each name preference. They should be the following: network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy user set integer 4 and network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server user set integer 2.

      On the dialog box that has appeared on your screen, change the value of network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy user set integer 4 to 20. Then change the value of network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server user set integer 2 to 30. Then select OK.

      Restart your Internet web browser. You have just increased your download speed.

    This article needs some clarification: "Your Internet Web browser" has to be Firefox - this does not work with Internet Explorer. The setting "network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy" only makes sense if you are using a proxy server...most people don't. The setting "network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server" refers to the amount of open connections to ONE server. Let's say you have 20 tabs open which 'you tube' videos, this number limits the requests your browser can simultaneously download. If your requests exceed this number, they simply have to wait for an empty slot. Every value above 10 is considered excessive and is considered poor etiquette. Making too many connections to a server may lead to you being banned from that server, because it looks to the server like a hacking attack.
