Things You'll Need:
- Wedding cards
- Pen
- Practice paper
-
Step 1
Start by making sure you have the correct spelling of both the bride and groom's names. The most embarrassing mistake would be to spell the recipients' names incorrectly and make it seem like you didn't spend much time writing the card.
-
Step 2
Decide what style of writing you feel is most appropriate, depending on your relationship with the couple. If you are close friends with them and have shared many experiences together, you might find that a memory or an applicable joke or meaningful quote is suitable. Close family members and friends might opt for this style, while other acquaintances choose to write a traditional letter of congratulations.
-
Step 3
Jot down some initial thoughts on a separate piece of paper to help organize the direction of the wording. As you think about what you want to say and write down a few thoughts, keep in mind the objective of your note, which is to congratulate the couple on their marriage.
-
Step 4
Begin with a sentence of two of your chosen words of congratulations. This might be a statement of best wishes for the upcoming event or one of congratulations following the happy event.
-
Step 5
If the card is being sent before the wedding and you are unable to attend the event, this is an appropriate place to mention your regrets for not being able to join them on their special day. A long explanation is not necessary, but a note of apology and a sentence explaining your reason is perfectly acceptable and courteous. However, be sure to return the R.S.V.P. card separately, if one was included with your invitation.
-
Step 6
Include your heartfelt sentiments for their future happiness together. You might mention a personal thought or two about marriage, but always bring the point back to their relationship. This is no place for trailing thoughts or a dissertation on the significance of love.
-
Step 7
When words fail, include a short excerpt from a poem or a quote that fits the occasion. Again, keep the length to a minimum, though, if you want your card to be read in full by the couple.
-
Step 8
Conclude the congratulatory note with a sentence wishing them the best and expressing your excitement for their future together.
