How to Crochet a Neck Warmer
A neck warmer is a short scarf that sits under the collar of your coat to keep the skin between your collarbone and chin warm. The ends of a neck warmer meet and overlap slightly just at the front of the throat, so it is more comfortable than wearing a long scarf under a jacket. A neck warmer could also be crocheted as a circular cowl, with no ends, that you wear around the throat. Either style works up quickly with bulky or super bulky weight yarn and a size N crochet hook.

Start by making a crochet chain that is approximately 24 inches long. See Resources if you need to brush up on basic crochet technique.

Turn your row and single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain to the end of the row.

Turn, chain 1 stitch, then single crochet in each stitch across the neck warmer.

Repeat Step 3 until the neck warmer is the width you want; 10 to 12 inches should be adequate.

Fasten off and use the yarn needle to weave in all loose ends. If you would like to turn the neck warmer into the cowl style, leave a long tail when you fasten off and use that to stitch the short ends of the neck warmer together to form a ring.

Tips & Warnings
Use the double crochet stitch for your neck warmer instead of single crochet to shorten the crocheting time. The double crochet stitch is approximately twice the height as single crochet, so you'll need less rows to reach the 10- to 12-inch width.
To vary the texture of your neck warmer, try crocheting in only the front loops or back loops on a few rows. This will create ridges in the surface of the neck warmer. You could also try single crocheting one row, then double crocheting the next, to vary the look of the neck warmer.
Remember to chain 3 at the start of a double crochet row instead of chain 1, if you decide to incorporate double crochet stitches into your neck warmer.
