How to Treat Molluscum on Eyelids

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin infection that can occur anywhere in the body, including the eyelids. Typically it strikes children but can affect adults as well. It causes papules (firm bumps) that can last anywhere from six months to a year if left untreated. Treatment is recommended however, because it is very contagious.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your doctor about procedures available to you. Certain procedures can remove the papules but might not be appropriate if the molluscum is located on your eyelid. They include freezing, laser therapy and cutterage. He can advise you of your options. If removal is not possible, you will need to take medications.

    • 2

Take all medications as directed by your doctor. Treatments normally used for warts are used to treat molluscum. They include drugs that stimulate the immune system, drugs that kill viral infections and retinoids, a derivative of vitamin A.

    • 3

Use anti-itch creams if you develop skin irritation around the papules. Do not apply directly to the molluscum. Use over-the-counter 1 percent hydrocortisone creams. If the itching is severe, talk to your doctor; he might be able to prescribe something.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have eczema, HIV or any other conditions that compromise your immune system, make sure you seek treatment. In these instances, the condition can be more serious and extensive.
