One of the nice things about traveling in an RV is that you can take most of your home conveniences with you to the outdoors. One of these conveniences is running water. RVs have water pumps that are activated when someone uses the sink, shower or toilet. One of the most common complaints of RV owners is the noise made by these pumps. Luckily, this noise is usually caused by vibration and can be reduced with a few tools and some easily purchased supplies.

Things You'll Need:

    Silence the water pump

  1. Step 1

Find your RV water pump. The pump is usually located near your RV water supply tank in a cabinet or under a seat in your dining area. If you can't find it, just turn on the water and the sound of the pump will help you.

  2. Step 2

Loosen the connecting screws. RV water pumps are connected either to a wall or floor by several screws. Loosen these and lift up the pump.

  3. Step 3

Using your scissors, cut the foam rubber to a rectangle that will fit entirely under the base of the pump. Slide the foam rubber rectangle under the pump. Reinsert the screws and tighten until the pump is secure. The foam rubber pad reduces the sound from vibration and will work best if the screws are not over-tightened.

  4. Step 4

Observe the water pipes that enter and exit the pump. Check if these pipes are routed through holes in a cabinet or wall. If the pipes are routed through these holes, most likely they are causing sound from vibration as water passes through them.

  5. Step 5

Cut the pipe insulation into three-inch lengths. Slide a section of insulation over a pipe and adjust it so it fits in the hole made for the water pipe. Keep it in place with duct tape. Repeat this process for each location where the water pipe passes through a hole in a cabinet or wall.
