So many people wonder how their friends make those cute little hearts, smiles and symbols on their MySpace and Facebook posts, but feel too silly to ask how it's done. Follow these simple steps and you, too, will be creating hearts, musical notes, smiley faces and designs with other symbols to decorate your posts and chat messages, even emails. It's very easy to learn, and lots of fun to do.

      Position your cursor in an email or chat/text box .

      There are two methods to achieve decorations and symbols. The first requires a desktop computer, with the side number keypad. Your cursor must be positioned inside a text typing box, such as an email or word document, a chat box, or Facebook/MySpace message posting box.

      Be sure numbers lock is ON.  Press and hold ALT + the numbers shown to create corresponding symbols.

      Simply turn on the 'number lock' on your computer keyboard, press and hold the ALT key while you type the following numbers. The corresponding symbol will appear. Feel free to print this page to keep as a handy reference.

      Be sure to type the zero first for the following symbols:

      If you are using a laptop or notebook computer, you will not be able to use the method above, as these keyboards do not have separate number keypads. Using CTRL + C, copy the entire display of symbols shown below and paste them (CTRL + P) into an email sent to yourself, or a word document. Keep the document open while you are chatting or messaging, and copy and paste the symbols individually, as you need to use them.
