Clean out the house. Sell unwanted items on online auction sites, such as eBay and Craigslist. Host a yard sale. Get neighbors involved and put together a street-wide yard sale to attract more traffic. Take old clothes and furniture, which are still in good shape, to a local consignment shop.

Take on odd jobs. Place an advertisement in your community paper highlighting the types of work you can perform, such as organizing homes and businesses, mowing lawns, general property upkeep and home repairs. Skilled professionals, such as accountants, teachers and business consultants can also take advantage of this type of work. Send out emails and use social media to contact friends and family members. Offer your services and ask them to pass your contact information on to anyone that may benefit from your help.

Pick up scrap metal. Scrap metal, such as aluminum cans, can bring in some extra change when needed. Examples of other metal items often accepted at local recycling centers in exchange for cash include, metal fencing, aluminum chairs and metal lawn ornaments. Offer to pick up larger metal items, such as dryers, from family and friends for free. Start placing unwanted, found and donated metal items to the side and cash a load in as needed for groceries, gas or smaller expenses.
