How to Install a Desktop Theme on Vista

Windows Vista is an extremely customizable operating system, with the ability to completely alter its appearance to your liking. Creative people have taken advantage of this, designing desktop themes to improve the visual experience of the operating system. Unfortunately, for the protection of its users, Windows Vista has disabled users' ability to use non-Microsoft desktop themes. Use the free utility VistaGlazz to patch Windows Vista so you can use of the desktop theme of your choice.

  1. Patching the System

      Launch VistaGlazz. Click the icon on the left side of the window to patch your system and enable the use of custom desktop themes.

      Click the button labeled "Patch Originals." You will need to restart your computer after this.

      Launch VistaGlazz after the computer has restarted. You should notice that the icon on the left side now has a green shield with a check mark over it. This indicates that your system was successfully patched.

    Installing Desktop Themes

      Download the Vista desktop theme of your choice from the Internet and extract it into a folder.

      Double-click on the "My Computer" icon, and navigate to your hard drive, the "Windows" folder, the "Resources" folder, and finally the "Themes" folder. Copy all of the files from your extracted desktop theme to this folder. Close all open windows.

      Right-click on the desktop, and click "Personalize." In the window that appears, click "Theme."

      Use the drop-down menu in the Theme Settings window to select the new theme. Click "Apply" to load the theme.

Tips & Warnings

  • VistaGlazz supports Windows Vista up to Service Pack 1 only. If you have Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 installed, VistaGlazz will be unable to patch the operating system files required to install custom desktop themes.
