How to Get Free Sims 3 Items
An interesting aspect of "The Sims 3" is the ability to install user-created content beyond the basic items that came with the game. There are creators who spend hours of their time making new hairstyles, clothing and household items for the game, which they often share with others via websites such as the Sims Resource. Although many of the premium items on the site can only be downloaded if you pay for a subscription, thousands of items are available for free to anyone who signs up for a basic account.

Visit the Sims Resource homepage. At the top of the page, click on the link that says "Register for Free." You will be taken to the Account Sign Up page, where you will create a user name and password, as well as fill in your name, email address, gender, year of birth and location. Enter the image verification words and agree to the site's terms of use; then click "Sign Up Now."

Check your email for a verification message. Activate your Sims Resource account by clicking on the link contained within the email. After verification, log in to your account.

Return to the homepage after logging in. Locate the "Sims 3 Downloads Archive," which is located approximately halfway down the page.

Determine what type of item you would like to acquire. Options include Sims, clothing, houses, hair, makeup, lots, objects and home decor items. To the right of each category, the page will tell you how many files are available for download as well as how many of those files are free. Click on the number under the "Free" header to be shown all of the free downloads in your category of choice.

Browse the available items. You can click on the photos to view enlargements and read descriptions of each item. When you find one that you would like to download, click on the downward-pointing arrow below its picture. A download box will pop up asking you which program you'd like to use to open the file. Because the items come in Zip files, you will need to have a program such as WinZip installed on your computer in order to open them.

Highlight all of the files in the WinZip window after the download has completed, and then click "Extract To." Click on "Documents," then "EA Games" and then "The Sims 3." If there is not a "Downloads" folder within "The Sims 3" folder, create one; then select it and click "OK." The item you just downloaded will go into this folder and will now be available within the game the next time you play.
