A fishtail, also known as a herringbone braid, is named for its tight pattern that resembles a herringbone or fishtail. You can create a fishtail braid in a ponytail, or by starting the braid at the front of the hairline. As the ponytail version of the fishtail is easier to do than the full version, it is better to try the ponytail version first.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two hair elastics

    Create the Braid

  1. Step 1

Pull your hair back into a ponytail. You can part your hair down the middle first or pull it straight back. Secure with an elastic.

  2. Step 2

Divide the ponytail into two equal sections. Hold one section in your right hand and one in your left.

  3. Step 3

Switch both sections to one hand. Create a third section by removing a small portion of hair from the outside of section one.

  4. Step 4

Cross the third section over and combine it with section two. You are again left with two sections.

  5. Step 5

Remove a small section of hair from the outside of section two. Cross it over and combine it with section one.

  6. Step 6

Repeat steps 4 and 5 until your braid has reached the desired length. Secure the end with an elastic.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is easier to create this style on someone else's hair than your own. If possible, practice on someone before braiding your own. Be sure to comb hair thoroughly before you begin. Make sure each section is the same size or the braid may look messy or uneven.
