How to Write a Visual Artist Resume

Creating a résumé for a visual artist can be more challenging than writing a typical résumé for an office job. The résumé of a visual artist is meant to be used as a tool to explain the work that the artist has created and also to detail the artist's experience. The Maine Arts Commission notes that while you are an artist, you are also expected to be a professional. An effective résumé of a visual artist should be a professional presentation that is easy to read.

Instructions

    • 1

List your basic information. This includes your name, phone number, address and e-mail so that you can easily be contacted by potential galleries that want to work with you.

    • 2

Explain your education. Most résumés list education, but this section is a little different for a visual artist. While a visual artist is not required to have a degree to be considered good, it still will help you to list your education if you have any to establish your training. Be sure to list all of the schools you have attended if there is more than one. If you have a degree or more than one degree, list them in order of importance. If you have no degrees, that is OK, too, but, the Maine Arts Commission says to list the art course work that you have done at each school and if you have not attended a school, then list classes and workshops you have attended and the artists who you have studied under.

    • 3

List any awards or honors that you have received. This is a good way to show the caliber of artist that you are and a great way to highlight your accomplishments.

    • 4

Create a bibliography. According to EmptyEasel.com, this is where you will list reviews written about your work, interviews that you have done and where your work has appeared in magazines, books and catalogues.

    • 5

List your exhibitions. The Maine Arts Commission says that you should include the exhibition title, the exhibition space and the city and the state. If you have done many exhibitions, break them into categories such as solo exhibition and group exhibitions.

    • 6

Explain your collections. According to the Maine Arts Commission, it is proper etiquette to ask permission to include collections that you have sold to private owners.

    • 7

State any professional organizations or affiliations that you have. This will demonstrate your commitment to the visual arts field and your ability to stay informed on trends and news regarding your work.
