How to Set Up a Netgear VPN

Virtual private networks (VPN) are secure groups of computers that have limited access to outside computers or the broader Internet. These type of secure networks are popular with governments and corporations who need to secure large amounts of data while allowing limited remote access to their clients and employees. Netgear routers can be configured to run properly on a VPN, providing a secure tunnel to access the VPN with the proper credentials.

Things You'll Need

  • FVS318 or FVM318 gateway (provided by VPN)
  • Network credentials (login, password, key)
  • Netgear router

Instructions

    • 1

Open your web browser and connect to the IP address given to you by your employer or the administrator of your VPN.

    • 2

Click the setup button located in the middle of the browser. If this is your first time connecting to the VPN, it will be highlighted for you.

    • 3

Choose "Edit" under the VPN Settings tab. This will allow you to view current exceptions to your firewall and VPN access.

    • 4

Right-click an empty slot and name it something that will identify the type of VPN you are accessing, such as "Work VPN."

    • 5

Click through ("Next") for each prompt that is automatically filled in for you, until you get to login and password. You will need to enter these according to the information provided by your administrator.

    • 6

Continue using the default settings until it prompts you for your network key, and add this in manually (provided by your administrator).

    • 7

Click "Finish" to test your VPN connection and finalize your setup.

Tips & Warnings

  • The default VPN settings with Netgear routers will allow you to connect and minimize security risks to your personal computer and the VPN. You can change some settings such as the secure association. Aggressive mode will allow you a faster connection but allows additional security risks that must be monitored by being careful what data you transmit over your computer.

  • Do not connect to VPNs through wireless Internet connections, as these are inherently unsafe and use weak encryption when it is available at all. If absolutely necessary to connect via wireless networks, try to make sure it is not through a public hot spot and avoid sending files or attaching them to emails.
