How to Use Extensions When Torquing Bolts

Using extensions when torquing bolts may be necessary if the bolt is in a hard to reach place. The extension will allow you to reach the bolt while the torque wrench allows you to torque the bolt to the recommended torque specification. However, when using extensions with torque wrenches, you have to be careful to hold the wrench properly so that you apply the correct amount of torque and are not assisting the wrench in any way, which can result in over- or under-torqued bolts.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the socket to the socket extension, and then attach the end of the extension to the end of the torque wrench.

    • 2

Fit the socket over the bolt you want to torque.

    • 3

Hold the socket extension in the center of the extension. Do not push up or down on the extension. The only reason you need to hold the extension is to keep the extension and the socket, straight and square on the bolt head. Do not apply force to the extension except to keep the extension straight.

Turn the socket wrench clockwise to tighten the bolt until the wrench clicks indicating that the proper torque value that you've set on the wrench has been reached.
