Things You'll Need:
- Ruler
- 4-inch by 4-inch by 8-foot post
- 2-foot by 2-foot square section of plywood
- Saw
- 1-inch nails
- Hammer
- Eight clothes hooks
- Screws
- Drill
-
Step 1
Go to a lumber yard to get all of the materials. Any lumber yard should have all of the materials listed, saving you time.
-
Step 2
Measure the pieces. Using a ruler, measure one inch from one end of the post on all four sides. Use the ruler as a straight edge to mark a line on each side. Measure the square section for the base from the plywood with the ruler. Use the ruler as a straight edge to draw the lines for cutting.
-
Step 3
Cut the pieces. Using the saw, cut the one-inch section from the end of the post. Draw a line from corner to corner, making an X on the square block. Cut the block into four triangular shapes. These will be the support at the base. Cut the square out of the plywood to form the base.
-
Step 4
Build the base and trunk. Place the post on end. Place the plywood square on top and center it. Hammer four nails through the plywood into the post. Turn the post over and place the base on the floor. Place each triangular piece on a side of the post and nail into place. This will provide more support for the base and keep the coat tree from tipping.
-
Step 5
Place the hooks. Place one hook at the top of the post on each side. Drill screws into the available holes for each hook. Using the ruler, measure down three feet and mark the point on each side. Place hooks at each point and attach with screws.
