1
Take some time to brainstorm freely and think about problems that you or people you know encounter on a regular basis. Since inventions are created to solve problems or make things easier, you can get a lot of great ideas just from thinking about things that you would like to simplify or solve. Write these ideas freely on a piece of paper, and don't try to limit yourself at this point.
-
2
Look over all of your ideas and narrow them down to the best one. This can be somewhat difficult, especially if they are all good invention ideas but try to choose the one that you think will be the most unique and beneficial.

3
Draft detailed plans for your invention and create a prototype. It's essential that your plans are accurate and detailed because the quality of your prototype will be determined by the quality of your plans. Your prototype should also be functional and durable, so take the time to create something that is well built.
-
4
Test your prototype to find out if your invention is a success. If your prototype does exactly what you had envisioned then you may not need to make many changes to create a final product. However, if it doesn't accomplish what it is supposed to then you need to go back to the drawing board. Whatever you do, don't allow yourself to become discouraged, simply make the necessary changes and test your design again.
-
5
Make a finished product. Once your prototype has all of the kinks ironed out of it you can create a finished version. This will most likely take a little extra time, but in order to have a complete invention you need to have a finished product.
-
6
Decide whether you want to apply for a patent or take your invention further. If you feel that your invention is worthy of a patent then now is the time to apply. At this point you also need to decide if you may be able to sell your invention or your patent for a monetary gain.
