How to Clean an Undermount Sink

Keeping the kitchen sink clean is not only a matter of neatness but is important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Dirty kitchen sinks are a breeding ground of germs and bacteria. Undermount sinks, which are mounted under the kitchen counter, are cleaned in much the same way as over-the-counter mounted sinks, except that you don't have to clean under the outer edge of the sink as it is tucked under the counter. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the sink of any dishes or bits of food. You do not have to scrub it clean.

    • 2

Fill the sink to the rim with very hot water, and add one cup of bleach. Let it sit for one hour. If you have a double sink, do this one side at a time so you can use the other side if you need to.

    • 3

Pull out the plug carefully with tongs or while wearing rubber gloves, so that you don't splash bleach water onto your clothes. Rinse the sink well. This will sanitize your sink basin.

    • 4

Pour a half cup of white vinegar in the drain and let it sit for 30 minutes, then flush it out with hot water. This will clean out any nasty smells in the drain.

    • 5

Rinse the sink again using cool water and a rag. If your sink is stainless steel, buff it with an SOS pad. Otherwise, skip this step and scrub the sink bin with a sponge and baking soda. You can also use a commercial cleaner, but baking soda is a good way to clean your sink without using harsh chemicals.

    • 6

Use a toothbrush to scrub around the faucet and handles of the sink with more baking soda. If there is a small space or crack where the undermount sink meets the counter, scrub that area with a toothbrush as well. Rinse the sink and faucet again with cool water and a rag.

    • 7

Spray the sink with a window cleaner to give it a good shine. This works on all types of sinks, including stainless steel and porcelain sinks. If you don't want to use a chemical window cleaner, dab a tiny bit of olive oil on a clean, dry cloth and rub it into the sink.
