A properly configured Cisco router will be able to install a password, set the hostname and Internet Protocol (IP) address, along with the subnet mask that will dictate the behaviors of the router device. Failure to properly configure and secure your router can result in substandard speeds, as well as possible intrusion from unauthorized users. This could put your personal data at risk for your entire network if others can directly access your router and indirectly, your computer.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open your HyperTerminal application which is located under the Start Menu using the path: "Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > HyperTerminal." HyperTerminal will allow you to configure all types of dumb routers such as Cisco brands that do not come with their own configuration utility.

  2. Step 2

If this is your first time using HyperTerminal, enter your local information such as your area code and user name, as well as the what you would like to name your router. None of this information is critical unless you are using a dial-up connection for your router. In that case, be sure to double check the access numbers and any information to reach an outside line or calling cards.

  3. Step 3

Enter the following command into the text box "Enter Privilege Mode." This will allow you to make changes to the router without adding additional codes or passwords.

  4. Step 4

Enter the following command when the cursor blinks ready, "Enter Configuration Mode 1." This opens the basic configuration command line.

  5. Step 5

Enter the following line to begin configuration, "CiscoRouter1(config-if)1 ip add 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 [Set IP address and subnet mask]." This sets the router as channel 1 for your internal network and masks your IP to the outside world.

  6. Step 6

Enter the following line to secure your credentials, "CiscoRouter1(config-line)1 password ***** #login ******." Enter the unique password and login name you wish to use for your router where the asterisks are. Be sure to pick a login/password combination that is not immediately obvious.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many newer Cisco routers have an automatic setup utility. This utility is typically based on windows and tabs, and can easily configure your router in a few minutes. Be sure to keep a copy of your initial configuration password and login in a secure location so that you will not lose it. If you do, you will have to reset the entire router and set it up from scratch.
  • Do not skip the login/password step. In addition to setting passwords and unique login names, you will be able to limit the range of the router so that neighbors cannot receive a signal, as well as make it so that your router does not broadcast its unique identification code. Be sure to explore all the options you wish to implement and read the help file that is included before adding new security features.
