How to Install & Download Music & Videos

Many users browse the Internet to enjoy new music or watch videos and take full advantage of their fast Internet connections. A good number of these audio and video clips are worth playing over and over again. This means that the site hosting the music or videos needs to be visited again just to enjoy the multimedia content being offered. To avoid these repetitive steps, you can download music and videos and install them to your system so you can play them without the need of an Internet connection.

Instructions

Search for the specific music track or video using your favorite search engine such as Google, Yahoo! or Bing. Use general keywords when conducting your search to see if any downloadable content comes up. Keep redefining your search by thinking of keywords such as the name of the artist, album, video description, lyrics or anything that will help the search engine find what you are looking for. If you still wind up empty, you can use this as keywords on the search engine: -inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:"index of" mp3 [search phrase] where you change [search phrase] to any keywords (i.e. name of the file that you looking for) that can narrow the search. Searching for videos using this method is done by simply changing "mp3" to a video file format such as "avi," "wmv," or "mov."

You should end up in a music download site or video download directory with links that lead to music or video clips. Browse the site and click on any download links or linked titles to see if it links to any multimedia content. If your media player opens, then you found a downloadable file.

Close the media player if it opens and right-click the link that triggered it. If you are using Internet Explorer, click "Save Target As..." and select the location in your computer where you want the file to be saved. Clicking the "Save" button will begin the download where you need to wait until it completes before you can open it. The amount of time it takes depends on the speed of the connection or size of the file.

Tips & Warnings

  • Depending on the browser, a pop-up window will ask you if you wish to download the audio or video file after left-clicking it. The right click menu also may vary depending on the browser. The idea is to save the file instead of opening it so it can be accessed locally.

  • Not all sites offer free downloadable music or videos because of copyright issues.

  • Make sure that the file you are downloading has an audio or video file format extension. You can determine the file format by looking at its icon or at the letters at the end of the file name after the period. Any other strange file types could be malware in disguise.
