How to Convert BMP to DWG

Save

DWG files are used in CAD engineering and architectural drawings and software for programs like AutoCAD. Image-editing software such as MS Paint uses BMP files for raster images and graphics. In most cases, people want to convert DWG files to BMP so the files can be uploaded to the Internet. While this is most common, there are cases where engineers want to convert BMP files to DWG so they can work with other file types in their favorite CAD software program.

Things You'll Need

  • BMP image
  • BMP to DWG conversion software
  • Choose a BMP file to convert. The image should be simple with contrasting colors. Black and white works best for conversion, though other colors are fine if they are significantly different from each other.

  • Acquire BMP to DWG converter software. There are products on the Internet that are free to use, such as Img2CAD. Download the software and install it onto your computer.

  • Choose your original BMP file in the converter software. Choose DWG as the file output after conversion as most conversion programs give you several options for this field. If your original image is in multiple colors, choose a high color threshold, such as 100. If your BMP is in black and white, keep the color threshold at zero.

  • Pick a location where you want your new DWG file to end up. You may want to choose where you have your other CAD work files so everything is grouped together. Press the "Convert" button to have your original BMP file converted into DWG.

  • Open up your CAD software to check if the file converted well. If you are unsatisfied with the drawing, try converting it again with different settings in thinning, scale and tolerance.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the BMP isn't converting well, open up an image editing program to fix problems in the original picture.
