If you are installing your Dish Network satellite TV system yourself, this includes properly wiring it. The most well-known issue involves getting the satellite's cable from the dish outside to the receiver inside. However, you also must ground the satellite dish to protect it from electrical surges. This is a big reason why professional installation is so often recommended.
Things You'll Need
- Dish Network satellite antenna
- Coaxial cable
- Grounding cable
- Aluminum/copper wire
- Drill with bit
- Dish Network receiver box
Make sure the dish antenna is properly mounted. Most dish masts can mount onto brick, wood or concrete; check the dish's installation guide for the correct type of bolts needed. The dish must also have an unobstructed view of the southern sky.
Attach the coaxial cable to the dish; it should attach to the Low Noise Block at the end of the dish's arm. Use the coaxial cable that is included with the dish, as other cables can be of a lower quality and may not transmit the signal as well.
Connect the dish antenna to its included grounding block. Connect the block to the coaxial cable and a grounding wire and mount the wire under the foot of the dish; it should include a grounding bolt to do this with. Attach the block with aluminum or copper wire to a solid metal ground like a cold water pipe.
Attach the second coaxial cable to the other end of the grounding block and route this cable into your home. You will likely need to drill a hole through the wall to route the cable. Connect the cable to the input port on the satellite receiver box.
Connect the receiver box's output to the TV set. You can have multiple cable options depending on the ports your receiver and and TV set have; these include HDMI, component, S-video, RCA composite and coaxial. If your setup includes a video recorder, connect the satellite box to the recorder and the recorder to the TV set.
