How to Install a Hot Tub on a Deck

Hot tubs, which are sometimes referred to as spas, are small pools filled with heated water used for bathing. They are excellent for relaxing and can have many therapeutic qualities. Most hot tubs are equipped with water jets and controls for changing jet intensity. While installing a hot tub is fairly straightforward, it does require some basic knowledge of plumbing, carpentry and electrical work. Installing a hot tub on a deck can be a bit more challenging, as it requires a strong support system for the tub's weight. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pick out a hot tub and be sure to check with the manufacturer (or refer to an owner's manual) to learn precisely how much it will weigh. On average a filled hot tub weighs 5,500 lbs., and with four people the overall weight jumps to around 6,000 lbs. Refer to building codes to ensure that the deck on which the hot tub is being installed can support the weight, and if it cannot, make the necessary improvements.

    • 2

Measure around the base of the tub to get an idea of the space it will occupy, and if it is a 110-volt model, keep in mind the location of the nearest electrical outlet. Using two-by-fours cut to the necessary length, construct the inner frame of the hot tub platform. Raised platforms help stop moisture from accumulating around the base of the hot tub, which can lead to decay and mildew.

    • 3

Position the hot tub within the inner frame. Measure how wide the tub's access panel is and cut multiple two-by-fours at that width. Lay the beams down flush and nail two two-by-fours across the top and bottom of the beams. This is the door for the hot tub's access panel.

    • 4

Cut out beams that will fit flush against the hot tub's rounded edges. This can be tricky, and requires the use of a jigsaw. Once there is a secure fit, nail the beams into place. Fill in the rest of the platform's frame with pressure-treated two-by-fours.

    • 5

Take off the access panel door and open the access panel. Connect PVC pipes from the water heater to the hot tub's base. Dig a trench of at least 18 inches in depth between the propane tank and water heater and lay down copper tubing. This tubing carries propane from the propane tank to the water heater. Make all connections according to the manufacturer's specifications.

    • 6

Connect wiring for the pump, controls and lights if applicable. Once the wiring is completed, check to make sure everything is connected properly, and fill up the hot tub with water.

Tips & Warnings

  • Connecting wiring is usually a job for an electrician, but individuals with some experience in the field can do it themselves.
