How to Connect a VGA to a TV

Video Graphics Array, or VGA, is a common display technology used by computers and computer monitors. While some newer HD TVs come with VGA ports to allow for easy computer connections, older screens are not likely to have VGA ports. Connecting a device that uses VGA to a TV that does not have a VGA port is relatively simple, but it requires the appropriate VGA converter for your TV and the appropriate cable for your TV to connect to the converter.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a VGA cable to the VGA port on the device you want to attach to the TV. If you are connecting a computer, the VGA port will be found on the back of the tower case for desktops and likely on the right or left side for laptops. VGA ports are rounded trapezoids with fifteen holes for pins and are usually blue. Some VGA cables have two small locking screws on either side of the cable head that you can screw in to secure the plug.

    • 2

Attach the VGA converter to the free end of the VGA cable. You will need to get a converter that turns the VGA connection into an interface that works for your TV. Most TVs are able to use standard AV cables, so a VGA to AV converter may work best, other possibilities are VGA to S-video or VGA to DVI.

    • 3

Connect the cable compatible with your VGA converter to the converter. Plug the other end of the cable into your TV.

    • 4

Turn on the TV and turn on the computer with the VGA output. The computer will be able to use the TV as a monitor.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a computer with a video card that has multiple display-out plugs, you can hook up a TV and another monitor at the same time. Laptops can be especially useful for dual monitor mode, since you can set a laptop next to a TV and display videos from the laptop onto the TV.
