The iPhone comes with a pre-installed text messaging application that allows users to store all conversations (text messages sent and received) between multiple recipients. By default, the iPhone will indefinitely save all incoming and outgoing text messages to the phone's hard drive, requiring users to manually remove them if they no longer want them saved. Deleting text messages from the iPhone is an extremely simple task and takes only moments to complete.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Open the text message application by clicking on the "Messages" icon. This will bring up a list of all conversations, arranged by date. The recipient with whom you have texted most recently will be at the top of the list.

  2. Step 2

Click on "Edit" at the top left-hand corner of the screen to delete an entire conversation. Click on the recipient's name and then select "Delete" to the right of the name.

  3. Step 3

Click "Done" to return to the Messages main menu.

  4. Step 4

Click on a recipient's name to view all individual text messages sent and received between you and that recipient. Click "Edit" at the top right-hand corner of the screen to delete specific messages without deleting the entire conversation.

  5. Step 5

Click on the circle to the left of each individual message that you would like to delete. When selected properly, the circle will display a red checkmark. Click on the red "Delete" button at the bottom left-hand corner of the screen to permanently delete these messages.

  6. Step 6

Return to the Messages main menu and repeat this process for all conversations or individual text messages you wish to delete.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you wish to delete an entire conversation but leave the recipient's conversation page intact (as a shortcut to sending more text messages to this recipient in the future), click on the recipient's name, select "Edit," and then select "Clear All" at the top left-hand corner of the screen. Click "Done" to complete this process.
