How to Unlock an AT&T Cell Phone for Free

Cellphones are designated for individual cellular carriers.

AT&T cellphones have locked SIMs to keep them from being used on other cellular networks. If you bought an AT&T cellphone on eBay or received it from a friend and want to use it on a different network, there is a way to do that. But first you have to unlock the SIM.

Instructions

1. Find the 15-digit IMEI, or international mobile equipment identifier, code. Most often, this is located under the battery above the bar code. Write down the code and save it for later.

2. Determine the make and model of your phone. This is usually found somewhere on the phone. Write this information down as well, such as LG Shine (CU720).

3. Call AT&T's customer service center at 800 331 0500 to see if the company can provide an unlock code. Mention the make, model and IMEI of your phone.

Tips & Warnings

• AT&T provides unlock codes under these conditions:

• Your AT&T wireless service has been active for more than 90 days.

• Your AT&T account is in good standing.

• Your phone is sold by other cell providers and not just AT&T.

• The unlock code for your phone is available from the manufacturer.
