How to Sterilize Nail Clippers

Save

Sterilizing nail clippers is a good safety precaution if any member of the family is bieng treated for a fungal condition affecting the feet or fingers. Several sanitizing solutions are available at pharmacies and beauty salons, which use them to clean combs, scissors and clipper blades, although household solutions are equally effective when you follow these steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Boiling water
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Chlorine bleach
  • Hair dryer
  • Resealable plastic bag

Soak the nail clippers in a diluted solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts boiling water for at least 10 minutes.

Soak the clippers in rubbing alcohol for 10 minutes if bleach is unavailable. No known pathogens can survive after being immersed in bleach or alcohol for a full 10 minutes.

Use a hair dryer to dry the nail clippers completely

Place the clippers in a resealable plastic bag until you need them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bleach can accelerate rust formation, so be sure to dilute the chlorine solution as described.
