How to Increase the Download Speed in Bitcomet

BitComet is a popular BitTorrent client that can be used to open .torrent files and connect to other remote users to share data. The download speed of BitTorrent clients like BitComet is affected by numerous factors such as your network usage, torrent health and settings within the BitTorrent client. Optimizing each of these factors increases your download speeds when using BitComet.

Instructions

    • 1

Cancel downloads and Internet use not related to BitComet on your computer and on any computers on your network. Other computers on your network using the Internet will also slow your BitComet downloads.

    • 2

Increase your wireless signal if applicable. When using a wireless network to run BitComet, remove any obstructions between your computer and the wireless access point. Move the computer closer to the access point if possible.

    • 3

Download healthy torrents. When you use BitComet to download files, the health of the torrents play a huge role in how fast you can download. Torrent health relates to how many other people are sharing the file you want to download; the more seeders (people who have the full file) and peers (people who are also downloading, but have some of the file) there are, the quicker your download will likely be.

    • 4

Disable firewalls. Firewall programs tend to interfere with BitTorrent clients by blocking ports that program may use to transfer data. Open your firewall program and disable it, or create an exception for BitComet. If you are running Windows Firewall, create an exception for BitComet by opening "Windows Firewall" under the "Control Panel," clicking "Allow a program through Windows Firewall," checking the box next to BitComet, then clicking "Apply."

    • 5

Alter your download preferences within BitComet. Open BitComet, click "Preferences," and then click "Connection." Increase the number of maximum connections and increase the number of connections per task if you constantly reach your current maximum while downloading. Under the "Task" menu alter your maximum download and upload speed. If your upload speed is set too low and your download speed is too high, it may compromise your download speeds. Tweak these settings up or down to see if it improves your download speed. There is no single setting for these numbers that maximizes speed, since each Internet connection has its own upload and download limits.

Tips & Warnings

  • Different BitTorrent clients may work better on certain systems. If BitComet is not working well for you, consider using uTorrent or Vuze (formerly called Azureus). BitTorrent clients all open the same torrent files and connect to the same pool of peers and seeds.

  • BitTorrent programs should not be used to transfer copyrighted data, as this may violate the intellectual property rights of the copyright holders.
