Sew a Duvet Cover

1
Decide what kind of duvet cover you want in your room and buy sheets to match that vision. The extra money you spend on a more durable and high-quality sheet will be worth it. It probably will be washed frequently and can be used for years. You often can find irregular-sized sheets for a deep discount at outlet centers. Buy two flat sheets one size larger than the size of the bed.

2
Wash and dry the new sheets to pre-shrink the fabric. This will keep the duvet cover from shrinking when you wash it again. Press the sheets with a hot iron if necessary. Using a clean floor or a larger bed as a workspace, spread the two sheets out. Line the sheets up back to back, with the finished sides on the inside. Place the existing duvet or comforter on top of the sheets with the top right corner aligned with the top right corner of the sheets.

With a fabric marker, mark a line around the duvet or comforter. Because the top right corners are aligned and the edges are matched up, all you need to mark is a line along the bottom and left side of the comforter. Mark the line one inch from the edge of the long side so there is a half inch of excess fabric on the sides. Mark the bottom line an inch-and-a half so there is a bit more excess fabric for the bottom.
-
4
Put the comforter aside and use sharp sewing scissors to cut the two lines you have marked. Discard the excess fabric. Pin together the two sides along the edges, making sure the sheets are lying flat and are perfectly matched up. To be accurate, mark a line a half an inch from the edges along all four edges. This is the line you will sew on.
-
5
Starting at the top left corner of the sheets, sew the two sides and bottom, leaving the top open. Then fold the sewn-together sheets together lengthwise and mark the center of the fold at the top of the sheets with a fabric marker.
-
6
Measure 12 inches from the center in both directions and mark it. This will be the opening where you can stuff the comforter in. Sew the top closed from the edge to the opening, on both sides.
-
7
Turn your new duvet cover right side out. Press the seams with a hot iron to get them to lie flat. Sew buttons and make button holes, or attach ties to the bottom opening to keep it closed securely.
-
8
Stuff the old comforter inside the new cover, shaking it out to distribute it. Put it on your bed for a quick and inexpensive room makeover.
