If you are in the habit of purchasing bags of new mulch every time your landscape begins to fade, you may want to consider investing in mulch dye to brighten it up. Mulch dyes are easy to apply and can last up to nine months, per application. Mulch dyes are available in a variety of colors including black, brown, cedar and cyprus, making it easy to match the mulch that you already have.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2-gallon all-purpose sprayer
  • 12 ounce bottle of mulch dye
  • Water
  • Old clothing
  • Plastic or tarps to cover stone surfaces or plants
  1. Step 1

Check the weather before you dye your mulch. The mulch should be completely dry before staining. It also needs approximately six hours of drying time after staining. If the weather report calls for rain in your area, wait for the next clear day.

  2. Step 2

Pour 1 1/2 gallons of clean water into a 2-gallon all-purpose sprayer. Shake the bottle of mulch dye well and add it to the water. Each 12-ounce bottle of mulch dye covers approximately 200 square feet of mulch. If you have more than 200 square feet of mulch you will need to purchase a few extra bottles of mulch dye and mix them accordingly.

  3. Step 3

Place the cap on the sprayer and shake the sprayer vigorously. Shake until the mulch dye is completely combined with the water. If it is not evenly dispersed, the color will not spray evenly.

  4. Step 4

Hold the spray wand approximately 6 inches from the mulch that you would like to dye. If you hold it any closer, you risk applying the mulch dye too heavily in the affected areas. Holding the spray wand too far away will disperse too much dye and give you less control over what gets sprayed.

  5. Step 5

Allow the mulch to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Normal drying times average about six hours depending on how heavily the mulch dye has been applied. If you choose to add an additional coat of mulch dye, make sure the first coat is dry first.

Tips & Warnings
  • A hand-held spray bottle works great for smaller areas. If you do not have a lot of mulch to cover you may find it easier to alter the measurements to accommodate a smaller spray bottle.
  • It is a good idea to wear old clothing when using mulch dyes because they will stain your clothes. Cover concrete, wood and stone surfaces before applying the mulch dye. These surfaces will stain. Mulch dye will also stain plants and flowers, so cover those up too before you spray.
