1
Examine the broken windshield and the area of the vehicle surrounding it. When replacing a broken windshield, it is crucial that the new windshield be installed with a strong bond and seal. Look for anything that may compromise proper installation, such as dents or scratches in the area, or corrosion damage. If there is damage that may result in improper installation, you may want to consult with a professional windshield glass installer.
-
2
Protect the vehicle from damage that may result during the replacement process. When removing and replacing a windshield, damage could occur to the painted surfaces of the vehicle from abrasion or chemicals. You can avoid this by placing a waterproof or vinyl cloth over the painted surfaces near the windshield. Tape off the defroster vents, which are located on the outside of the vehicle directly beneath the windshield area. This will prevent anything from falling into the vents.

3
Remove the windshield wipers and metal trim surrounding the windshield. The wipers can be removed with a specialized tool called a windshield wiper puller, while the metal trim can be removed with a specialized trim removal tool. Insert the trim removal tool under a section of trim and pull towards the center of the windshield until it releases. Repeat for each piece of trim.
-
4
Use the windshield knife to slice through the adhesive material holding the broken windshield in place. The windshield chisel can be used, if necessary, to loosen the glass.
-
5
Apply a windshield puller, which is a tool equipped with a large suction cup, to the glass to assist you in removing it from the vehicle.
-
6
Prepare the mounting surfaces on the vehicle and the new windshield for bonding. Clean the mounting surface on the vehicle with the windshield scraper, and then apply a bonding agent to the surface. Scuff the edge of the new windshield glass with the windshield knife to promote adhesion, and then apply the bonding agent to the mounting surface of the glass.
-
7
Use a caulking gun to apply a continuous bead of adhesive all the way around the mounting surface opening on the vehicle.
-
8
Place the new windshield glass into the opening, with the help of the suction cup, and press it against the bead of adhesive. Refer to the recommended drying time for the brand of adhesive that you use.
-
9
Re-install the trim and windshield wipers, and clean the work area. Also, use this time to make a final inspection of your work.

Tips & Warnings
Specialized windshield removal and replacement tools can be purchased at your local auto parts store or online.
Wear protective eyewear, gloves and clothing to ensure your safety while you remove and replace a broken windshield. Ensure that you have a continuous bead of adhesive on the mounting surface in Step 7. A gap can cause the windshield not to adhere correctly, which can lead to leaks or wind noise.
