Instructions

  1. Creating a Witch

    • 1

Roll a posterboard cone to fit your child's head. Tape the cone securely into shape. Cut a circle out of a second sheet of posterboard to form a hat brim. Roll the edges together and tape. Trace the cone onto the center of this circle and cut this circle into wedges, like a pie. Push the cone upward through the brim and tape securely. If you prefer, black felt may be used in the same way to create a witch hat.
For the buckle in the witch hat, cut a small square out of cardboard and cover it in aluminium foil. Thread black ribbon through the band, and glue black ribbon into place around the hat. .

    • 2

Cut a jagged or pointed edge along three sides of the polyester fleece, leaving one long edge plain. Thread a needle with heavy duty elastic cord and use the cord to gather the plain long edge. Knot the cord at a comfortable length. This should give you a working cape.

For the skirt, cut the 1/4 inch black elastic long enough to wrap around the child's waist and knot securely. Cut tulle into strips twice as long as the desired length of the skirt. Attach to the elastic with slip knots. Continue until the skirt is as full as it needs to be. Accent the costume with reflective tape. The tape can add additional color or design patterns, but will mainly act as an extra safety measure.

    • 3

Spray paint a broom silver or gold. Add reflective tape to the broom for additional safety if the witch is going trick or treating at night. Complete the outfit with a small plastic cauldron to serve as a trick or treat bag.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear the witch costume with leggings and a turtleneck or long sleeved T-shirt, or, in case of cold weather, a full sweatsuit. For color, most Halloween witches favor something in black. Some common color combinations are black and green or black with orange stripes. Replace the black tulle in your skirt with acid green and purple for a more playful and whimsical witch look. Add witch makeup including a green tinged base to create a scarier witch using the same costume.
