Consult your Compaq PC's user manual to see just how much RAM your computer can handle. Every CPU can handle a very specific amount of RAM and no more. If the maximum amount of RAM you can upgrade to is 1.5GB and you buy a 2GB stick of RAM you will probably be wasting some money.

Check the user manual again to see just what type of RAM you need. Generally speaking, computers take one of two types of RAM: SDRAM or DDR-SDRAM. The differences are mainly cosmetic, but you computer will generally be able to handle one or the other depending on its age---not both.

    • 3

Turn off your computer and disconnect it from any power outlets. Never open your computer with it powered on or even plugged into a power source. In doing so you run the risk of not only electric shock but also serious damage to the computer.

    • 4

Look at how many available RAM slots you have. RAM plugs directly into the motherboard and all Compaq desktop computers will have a few empty slots available for upgrades. Make sure you know exactly how many empty slots you have available so you don't buy too many RAM sticks.

Now you can buy the correct type and amount of RAM for your PC.

Plug your new RAM directly into the empty slots on your motherboard. Push it firmly but gently into place; don't press too hard as you don't want to damage the RAM. The small plastic clips will enclose the card when it is fully set. Once this is done you can seal up your computer's case, plug everything back in and turn it on. No additional installation is required. The new RAM will be in use automatically.

Check to make sure your new RAM is operational. Right click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and select "Properties." The total listed next to "Installed RAM" should now reflect the new RAM you've added to your machine.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is not recommended that you add RAM to a laptop computer yourself as it it much harder to open up a laptop case and the chance of permanently damaging your computer in the process is high.
