How to Reset an Administrator Password in Vista

Windows Vista is one of the top computer operating systems in the world and features some of the best security capabilities available. Among these features is the ability to protect your computer from other users by setting a password. An administrator password gives you the ability to deny access to your computer's system by anyone who does not have the password. If your administrator password is lost or forgotten, you can reset it if you know the right way to access your Vista options.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Turn your computer off and restart your computer in safe mode. You can do this by pressing F10 as you are turning your computer on.

  2. Step 2

    Log on to Windows using an account different from the one with the administrator password that you cannot remember.

  3. Step 3

    Click "Start" in the lower-left corner of your desktop and and click "Run."

  4. Step 4

    Type "controluserpasswords2" into the open text box and click "OK" or press "Enter."

  5. Step 5

    Click the tab for your administrator account in the pop-up menu and click "Reset Password."

  6. Step 6

    Enter a new password and enter it a second time into the "Confirm" box. Select "OK" and your password will be reset.
