How to Tighten Auto Battery Connectors

An important part of both installing and maintaining an auto battery is the proper connection of the battery cables to the battery terminals. This will ensure a good flow of electricity from the battery to the starter, giving you the needed power for starting up a cold engine. This is especially important during wintertime.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire brush
  • Battery terminal cleaner (available at auto parts stores)
  • Clean rags
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that the positive battery cable connecting clamp has an insulated cover over it to prevent shock or sparking.

    • 2

A tight connection will do you no good if it is dirty. Clean the battery terminals and battery cable connector clamps with battery terminal cleaner and a wire brush. Wipe dry with a clean rag.

    • 3

Turn the bolts on both of the battery cable connector clamps counterclockwise to open them enough to slide over the battery terminals.

    • 4

Slide the negative battery cable connector clamp over the negative terminal on the battery and tighten the bolt on the clamp by turning it clockwise with a wrench. Make it snug, but take care not to strip it by overtightening it.

    • 5

Remove the plastic bag or insulated cover from the positive connector and slide it over the positive terminal on the battery. Tighten it in the same manner as you did the negative cable in Step 4.
